Academy conversion

The government’s academisation agenda means many schools are currently looking to convert to academy status, providing new potential for achieving efficiencies and for collaboration.

The process of conversion is time-consuming and requires a great deal of planning and preparation in addition to the time required for the actual conversion period, which our practitioners estimate to be around 6 months (with around 18 months of planning prior to this).

This webpage provides guidance for school business management professionals who are looking for support when converting to academy status.

Our members have been producing an academy conversion timeline, representing the stages they went through during recent academy conversions. From application through to completion stage, the resource will provide a list of the steps needed to convert to academy status, including the smaller steps through to larger changes in systems and processes. 

There will also be clickable web-links within the document so you can go straight to documentation you will need during the process, for example FMGS templates, model Memorandum and Articles of Association and similar.

Collaboration and efficiency

Academy conversion provides a collaboration avenue, and also a vehicle for finding efficiencies. The NASBM Member Library houses guidance on collaboration and emerging school structures. NASBM has also produced another factsheet on financial health and efficiency.
