MSc in Educational Leadership (School Business Management)

Available to School Business Managers on school leadership teams, the programme offers personal and professional development through research and leadership whilst contributing to school improvement and working within the wider curriculum.

The programme aims to:

  • equip students with a body of knowledge that will enhance their understanding of educational leadership from the perspective of a school business manager in a number of cultural contexts
  • develop participants' ability to reflect on, analyse and synthesise concepts, theories and models of educational leadership drawn from a number of cultural contexts
  • provide analytical frameworks that can be applied by students to their own institutions 
  • provide opportunities for the improvement of research-based leadership skills 
  • develop participants’ ability to understand small-scale research.



Course Description
The MSc Educational Leadership (School Business Management) is a three year course of 180 credits in total, which is provided through high quality blended learning.

The first module is worth 60 credits and is provided through a blend of residential workshops, and Distance Learning, and in collaboration with The National Association of School Business Management (NASBM). This is an action research module and is assessed through presentation of research and submission of a 8,000-10,000 word report-portfolio assessed by the University of Leicester, School of Education. The National Association of School Business Management working in collaboration, but independently of the School of Education for this part of the programme, provide 360º feedback, and a Firo B diagnostic tools which feed into development goals that link to the NASBM standards. A reflective account is submitted based on this that is assessed by the NASBM for fellow status of NASBM.

The next 60 credits are achieved through engaging with Distance Learning. The first module is a content module worth 30 credits elected from either The Educational Policy Module or The Human Resource Management Module. The content module is assessed by the submission of a 4000-5000 word assignment. The next module is the Research Methods Module which is worth 30 credits and is a core module. The Research Methods Module is assessed by a 4,000 – 7,000 word assignment. The final 60 credits are achieved through engaging with Distance Learning for the dissertation which is assessed by the submission of a 15, 000 – 20, 000 word dissertation.

Participants engaging with the MSc in Educational Leadership (School Business Management) will work together and develop peer support networks. Opportunities will be provided to be able to link in with specifically identified institutional development issues. The practitioner research approach to investigating and developing professional practice enables participants to focus on organisational practice and to create and develop a community of learning that is increasingly underpinning the ethos and culture of education in the 21st century.
 


Awards
It is possible to exit the programme after successful completion of the first 60 credits at Masters level with a Post Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership.

It is possible to exit the programme after successful completion of 120 credits at Masters level with a Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Leadership.

It is possible to exit the programme after successful completion of 180 credits at Masters level with an MSc Educational Leadership (School Business Management).
 


Entry Requirements
You will ideally hold the CSBM or DSBM, or an alternative professional qualification at Level 6 with three years relevant work experience.
Membership of NASBM is a requirement in order to access the programme.

Fees
The current fee for the first year programme of Blended Learning is £2,800 (subject to annual university wide increases).  Payment by 2 equal installments can be arranged.

Fees include attendance at residential study schools, materials, student registration, virtual learning environment, certification and NASBM Annual Awards Ceremony.
The fee for the second and third year is £1,540 per year for Distance Learning.
